Big Lottery Funding for Local Mums Kickboxing Group

FunMeFit and Steel City Hub, our marketing side of things is thrilled to have helped a small mums and kids kickboxing group in Stannington, Sheffield achieve great things.

The group called ‘MUMMY POWER’ has been awarded funding from the Big Lottery Fund as part of the National Lottery. We are incredibly proud to be able to share their fantastic news and we know the project will help so many local mums who desperately want to get healthy with their children.

 

Kate Hill, mum of two, who is now the group Chairperson brought the group together after seeing there was a need for inclusive fitness groups that enabled mums to socialise and not worry about childcare. Along with Samantha Marren, mum of one and group Treasurer and Hannah Sanderson, mum of two and group Secretary, they started kickboxing at local gym, Powers Martial Arts Centre, Stannington. They applied for Big Lottery Funding last year and saw a huge rise in local women wanting to be involved.

 

“We are so thrilled to receive this funding from the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund for our friendly, little group. I set up the group initially because I loved kickboxing but didn’t want to do it alone. I struggle so much with childcare after work and didn’t want the kids sitting watching TV after school so I asked my local gym if they’d help.”

Paul and the team at Powers Martial Arts Centre have been totally supportive throughout, doing whatever they could to help. When Hannah and Samantha came on board to support it, there was no stopping us. We applied for Big Lottery Funding and it took almost a year for us to get everything set-up but it was well worth the effort,”

The group now trains together twice a week and the funding has enabled the group to enjoy two, free 1-hour training sessions every week for the women and their children, as well as a free nutritional course and weight programme every month, gradings to build some recognisable skills, achievement awards and free t-shirts and gloves to train with.

 

“Hannah, Kate and I mentioned it to some other mums at school and we were overwhelmed with the response. This funding means that we’ve could offer mums a place to come and exercise whilst enjoying a good, social atmosphere. We always have a great time, everyone is so friendly.”

“The children have their own trainer too for those who want to do kickboxing – they love having their own t-shirts and gloves to wear. We wanted to make sure the mums and kids are rewarded for their hard work too so we are organising awards ceremonies and social events. The Big Lottery Fund has made all of this possible.”

The gym, owned by Paul Powers, has provided a trainer for the mums and one to work with the children when they want to take part so that no-one is left out.

We were already well-known in the local community but this funding has meant that we are getting more and more families walking through the door to get involved. It’s great to see and we are happy to support Mummy Power for as long as they need it.”

The group trains at Powers Martial Arts Centre on Monday’s 6-7pm and Wednesday’s 5.30-6.30pm. There is a suggested donation of £10 per mum for the whole year and a £2 suggested donation per child for the year. This helps the group collect funds for additional uses that benefit the group, such as events and extra equipment needed.

Have a Green Gym Day!

When I was asked by our New York partner, Nancercize if I wanted to be involved in co-organising an international day to celebrate local parks and encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors, the yes came without any hesitation.

Part of what I do at FunMeFit is try to promote a healthy, active and largely outdoor lifestyle. What we and many more around the western world seem to be forgetting, worryingly, is that the outdoors is where our natural home is, it’s what makes us feel alive, it’s what we as human beings need – to be with nature and realise our place in it.

We can laugh at the television all day and think that’s ‘living’. Research shows that an increasing number of us are settling for a sedentary lifestyle and yes, it’s easy, it’s convenient and we feel we have everything we need in our gadget-filled homes. But what we are missing out on is the sense of being part of something bigger, something unpredictable and something that is more natural for our physical and mental well-being.

Some of us feel like caged wild animals when we spend too long indoors and that’s probably because we were outdoors a lot as children. If children don’t experience the outdoors enough, it’s been suggested that they grow up without a sense of belonging to nature and ultimately will not develop into a balanced and happy adult.

Since we live in cities filled with other people, cars, buildings and lots of noise, more often than not, our only opportunities to connect with nature are provided by our local parks and green space. Many of us spend little or no time at all in local parks, not seeing the relevance of them or the need for them.

So, whether you’re an outdoorsy person or not, give your local park a chance. Give nature a chance. Be part of Green Gym Day on Sunday and if you’re reading this, I’m not asking you to be in your park all day or to spend time there foraging for nuts and berries. I’m asking that you give your park a chance to show you what it has to offer. Take a walk, listen to your surroundings, play with your children, watch the birds, feel the sunshine (or rain) on your face and if you don’t feel slightly happier or you don’t see any benefits for your family at all then write and tell me.

100 Days till the Olympics – Dance Fit to Classical Music!

Last week the Fun Me Fit team saw a spectacularly interesting and unique event at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield – an opportunity for members of the general public to dance themselves fitter to classical music, thanks to Music In The Round and Ensemble 360!

What on earth…? Getting fit to classical music!? We thought.

On 18th April, watching a large group of regular (non-dancing) people learn and follow a physically challenging 20 minute-long dance routine with only an hour and a half to practice was something I thought could never be pulled off for the final event in front of a local camera crew.

Feeling nervous for them as the clock struck 8pm, I watched the little gaggle of children – mainly girls but one brave little boy, some senior citizens and a few enthusiastic ladies follow what had just been learned to an excellent and moving standard. With the relaxing but enlightening music performed by the live orchestra, Ensemble 360 – the beautifully choreographed routine was carried out innocently and lovingly by each member. Even when mistakes in the routine were made, it didn’t seem to matter because the music just made it look fun!

A great achievement by all and Fun Me Fit couldn’t wait to get blogging about it! We are glad that we supported the event.

Something to try if you’re bored on afternoon – play some nice classical music and teach yourself (and your kids) a few physically challenging steps to a routine of your own design – practice, practice, practice then surprise someone close to you with a great performance! You’ll definitely feel the physical benefits.
